Cumin Seeds

Cumin is an annual herbaceous plant native to Eastern Mediterranean region and is popularly used for food flavouring, aroma. The seeds of the plant are used in whole or powdered form in food processing industry. Both whole seeds and powdered seeds are internationally traded. Cumin essential oil is also becoming popular in the western hemisphere. Cummins is widely used in traditional and herbal medicinal system for being a natural stimulant, carminative and having antimicrobial properties. It is also used for flavouring dishes, biscuits, confectionery and other spicy products. It is also used in different industries for its essential oil.

In India, cumin grows abundantly in the mild, equable climate of Gujarat and Rajasthan where rich well-drained, sandy, loamy soil and the sunny, conducive environment is available. They contribute almost 90 per cent of total cumin production in the country. Rajasthan is the largest producer of cumin seeds contributing about 50-55 per cent of the total production. India is the biggest consumer of cumin seeds and as a result, the domestic market absorbs almost 90 per cent of the production. The annual domestic demand is about 20 lakh bags i.e. about 1.1 lakh tonnes. Indian cumin is exported in its natural and powdered forms, besides as essential oil.

Rajasthan is largest Cumin producing state in the country. Gujarat is the second largest cumin seed producer in India. Rajasthan and Gujarat contribute to approximately 90% of the production in the country.
